BIAS FX 2

BIAS FX 2 has significantly improved the realism of its guitar tones with the latest update to its DSP sound engine. With a vast array of effects and IR support, it’s an all-in-one solution for home recording enthusiasts.

The Tempo control in BIAS FX 2 is quite standard, offering a host DAW tempo lock/unlock feature and a tap tempo button. The tuner is muted by default but includes a mute toggle and frequency controls for adjusting the ‘A’ setting between 430 and 445 Hz.

I have a confession to make: despite three decades of playing guitar, I’ve never used a looper pedal. By the time they became popular, I was already recording on a PC and didn’t see the need for one in live performances. Because of this, I can’t accurately compare the Looper in BIAS FX 2 to other loopers or how it performs in live settings compared to standalone pedals.

What I can say is that the Looper in BIAS FX 2 is very useful for quickly developing song ideas. Within a few loops, I was able to create a new song concept effortlessly. The export function allowed me to save my idea as a WAV file for later use in building a new song.

Pros

  • Extensive selection of amps and effects
  • Amazing new cab models
  • Updated, cleaner interface

Cons

  • Slow initial loading time
  • Guitar Match feature isn’t always reliable

The guitar amp software market is rapidly expanding, offering guitarists numerous options for achieving great tones for recording and practice at home. Positive Grid’s BIAS FX 2 has been a favorite since its release in 2019. However, recent advancements in competing software have challenged its position as the leader in simulated guitar sounds.

When Positive Grid announced a major update, free for existing users, we were eager to test it out. The update features a complete overhaul of the DSP sound engine, an improved Guitar Match feature, the all-new IR Cab 3.0 for impulse responses, and a new Cloud system that allows you to take your tones anywhere.

These updates aim to help BIAS FX 2 catch up with its competitors, but have they succeeded? Let’s explore.

Routing View

The Routing view is where BIAS FX 2 truly shines. Here, you can quickly and easily swap gear in and out, set up complex signal paths, and use the Scene control to A/B test settings and find your favorite combinations. The extensive library of amps, cabs, and effects included with this plugin can be routed into dual-amp configurations for rich stereo effects. Each pedal or amp could be a standalone plugin, making the comprehensive collection in BIAS FX 2 truly impressive.

Another standout feature is the ability to import custom amps created in its sister program, BIAS AMP 2. This amp customizer and IR loader program allows you to design your own amplifier with detailed specifications. You can then import these custom amps into BIAS FX 2’s vast gear suite, enhancing its usability and value for tone enthusiasts.

I could rave about the range of this plugin for days, but instead, I’ll list the available gear options.

Imagine a room in your house filled with nearly every major amp, speaker cab, effects pedal, and microphone ever made. What would you choose to play through? Would you create an intricate signal path using a vintage tube compressor, wah, fuzz, and delay to mimic Jimi Hendrix’s sound? Would you set up a split configuration with an authentic ’59 Tweed on one side and a ’67 Blackface on the other, each with its own effects chain for the ultimate dirty blues tone? Or would you use a JCM800 and a 5150 for a crunchy sound? Would you prefer Celestion Greenbacks or a Mesa cab? Would you mic up with Royer, MD421, or C414?

BIAS FX 2: Usability and Features

Positive Grid has outdone themselves with the user-friendly design of BIAS FX 2. The interface is intuitive and streamlined, making it easy to navigate and customize your sound. Everything on the Routing screen can be clicked and dragged for quick rearrangement, and each piece of gear can be right-clicked to bring up context menus. Replacing, disabling, or removing gear takes only a few clicks, and tweaking settings is just as straightforward. It’s clear that BIAS FX 2 was created with the player in mind.

One caveat to this extensive functionality is its CPU usage. BIAS FX 2 can consume up to 6% of the CPU on a quad-core, overclocked gaming PC that serves as my DAW machine, with each additional track adding another 3-4%. If you’re working with an older computer, you might need to utilize the dual-routing (stereo) functions on a single track instead of multiple tracks, especially in larger sessions. During one session, I had seven instances of BIAS FX 2 open (three double-tracked guitars plus bass) and noticed a significant impact on my PC’s performance. I even experienced a few crashes during mixing and mastering when all my metering and mastering plugins were active. Despite this, the plugin’s extensive features and usability justify a full five-star rating.

The aim of BIAS FX 2 is to bring an entire room’s worth of gear to your DAW. This guitar amp and effects simulator suite from Positive Grid is designed to provide an immersive tone experience. Let’s dive into its capabilities.

For this review, Positive Grid provided access to the Elite version of BIAS FX 2, which includes 210 presets, 100 amps, and 122 effects. It’s akin to having unrestricted access to a local guitar store. There are also lighter versions, Standard and Pro, for those who prefer fewer options.

Upon opening BIAS FX 2, you’re greeted with the Routing screen, where you can customize your signal path with various effects and amplifiers. The top menu bar includes icons for Positive Grid’s Tonecloud, preset loader, preset editor, store link, tempo controls, Pedalboard view toggle, Tuner, Looper, Settings menu, and Help. The bottom bar features input and output volumes, Guitar Match toggle, Quick Snap buttons for loading favorite setups, and a global output settings menu and toggle.

Clicking the Pedalboard button takes you to a screen where you can quickly modify amp, pedal, and rackmount settings, though you can’t swap them out, which is ideal for live performance adjustments. Clicking any gear on the Routing screen provides a detailed view for fine-tuning. Double-clicking gear opens a browser for changing effects and amps. Options include single or dual routing, pedal scenes, adding effects and amps, clearing the pedalboard, and undo/redo. The plugin’s GUI has a modern, clean look, similar to Neural DSP’s guitar VSTs, making it easy to use.

BIAS FX 2 includes a vast array of famous amp models, from Fender cleans to 5150-inspired high-gain amps, and everything in between. You can even create a hybrid of your favorite amps, blending their EQ characteristics for a unique sound. Classic BIAS models have been remastered with the new DSP engine for improved dynamic response and realistic tube saturation.

The cabinets have also received a significant upgrade, offering refreshed sounds and a streamlined editing interface. Classic mics like the SM57 and Sennheiser MD421 are included. The Elite version provides official Celestion impulse responses, and the ability to load custom IRs remains.

One of BIAS FX 2’s standout features is its extensive pedal selection. From the Klon Centaur and Keeley Compressor to the Boss DM-3 and Binson Echorec, nearly every effect imaginable is available and accurately modeled. The Elite version includes around 50 new effects, making it one of the most comprehensive sets on the market.
