Many designers love CorelDRAW

CorelDRAW is an exceptionally powerful and versatile graphic design application, offering unique tools and collaboration features tailored to enhance creative workflows. It is now available on both macOS and Windows platforms.

In recent versions of CorelDRAW, image-editing tools within PHOTO-PAINT have been integrated into the Adjustment Docker. The same tools can also be accessed in CorelDRAW, though they are found under the Effects menu rather than in a dedicated Docker. This update makes the tools faster and easier to use, with helpful improvements like color-coded sliders for white balance and tint adjustments, allowing users to see how moving the sliders affects the color temperature in a way that raw Kelvin numbers do not make clear.

Pros

  • Professional-grade features, some of which are unique
  • Fun, easy-to-use effects that provide instant gratification
  • Highly customizable interface
  • Subscription and perpetual licenses available at reasonable rates
  • Easier to learn than Illustrator for a pro-level tool

Cons

A series of new features enhances productivity and elevates Corel’s image-editing capabilities.

As the software industry shifts from major releases every few years to subscription models with automatic updates, new features arrive more frequently. CorelDRAW Graphics Suite has been releasing annual updates, but subscribers (and those with perpetual licenses and active maintenance) now receive exclusive new features every six months.

The March 2022 Subscriber Update introduces some minor yet useful options, such as new functionalities for working with multi-page layouts, easier ways to manage design elements shared via Corel’s cloud, additional export options, and personalized contextual help to help users get up to speed with all features.

Adjusting tone curves for an image allows for precise control over color and brightness, but it can be difficult to master. The new Tone Curve adjustment tool includes an automatic option hidden away as a small button next to the reset controls. If the result isn’t satisfactory, you can use the sampling tool on the image to select points on the curve to adjust—or simply click on the curve. There’s also an automatic adjustment in the new Levels tool and an auto-desaturate tool, which is easier to find in the Adjust menu than in the Docker.

If you’ve made multiple adjustments to an image and want to reuse them, you can copy the adjustments (again using the Adjust menu) and apply them to another image. For projects like brochures, photobooks, or packaging where multiple images need a consistent look, you can save these adjustments as a custom preset, which can be used in both CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT. The preset is saved as a CorelDRAW stylesheet file, which can be shared with colleagues working on the same project. While this feature is not yet available through Corel’s cloud service, it might be included in future updates. This ensures consistency across large projects, but individual designers can still tweak and undo these adjustments since they are non-destructive.

improvements

Significant improvements have also been made to photo editing, with new controls that simplify a range of adjustments. These adjustments are now non-destructive and include live previews, allowing you to experiment with effects without worrying about irreversible edits. This is particularly useful for graphic designers who may use various techniques to integrate photos into a design, especially since a set of adjustments can be saved for reuse on other images.

While Adobe typically leads the way in graphic design software, CorelDRAW has surprised us by offering features that Adobe Illustrator lacks—at least without additional plug-ins or extra steps. Though Adobe Illustrator remains the Editor’s Choice due to its powerful integration with other Creative Cloud apps, CorelDRAW stands out for its accessibility and ease of use, making it a strong contender, especially in the Windows-based graphic arts industry.

New 2022 vector drawing

CorelDRAW excels in vector drawing, editing, and layout, and is particularly popular in the apparel, garment, and textile industries. Previously available only for Windows, the software is now accessible to macOS users, expanding its audience. With Adobe Illustrator firmly established among professional graphic designers, CorelDRAW is striving to level the playing field by incorporating modern features like centralized collaboration, expanded compatibility, and subscription-based extras.

In addition to macOS support, the latest version includes new cloud-based collaboration and asset management features, as well as an Adjustments inspector. Below, we evaluate these and other new or improved features.

Several new tools have been introduced to simplify working with CorelDRAW, though the software remains a powerful package that can be challenging to master. The Learn Docker lets you search for tools and training materials, displaying which menu or Docker specific commands are in (although unlike similar features in Microsoft Office, you can’t click on the results to open the tool). Corel claims the results are personalized based on the projects you’re working on, your experience level, and the types of projects you select in CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT. However, we didn’t notice much difference in the results when selecting different levels or project types. The search function is also very broad: searching for “white balance” shows where to find the relevant tool but also suggests training materials on converting to black-and-white or removing white fringes.

As software moves towards faster releases with smaller sets of features, user feedback becomes increasingly important (for getting the right features and for making iterative improvements, such as the tweaks to exporting assets). While the CorelDRAW community has always been vocal, several of the improvements in this update come directly from user requests. There is now a public feedback site where users can suggest features and upvote existing suggestions.

The subscription model is also more flexible. Instead of choosing between a Windows or Mac license, you now receive a hybrid license that allows installation on either OS. You can also install the software on a secondary device, even if it’s on a different OS, as long as you only use one device at a time. This flexibility is particularly beneficial for hybrid and remote work situations, where your home system might differ from what you use in the office.

How Much Does CorelDRAW Cost?

CorelDRAW is available in three tiers: the hobbyist-friendly Essentials ($129 one-time purchase), the design enthusiast-level Standard ($299), and the professional Graphics Suite ($549). The Graphics Suite is also available as a $269-per-year subscription, which breaks down to $22.42 per month. The first two options are still Windows-only. A free 15-day trial is available, and there are special education and educational pricing options. Subscriptions include support and updates.

Other new features may not be as flashy, but they streamline the often tedious production processes that consume much of a designer’s or illustrator’s time.

Multi-page projects in CorelDRAW, whether brochures or collections of different assets like web ads and banners, now benefit from better handling of facing pages and spreads. If you insert a new page in the middle of a layout, you get a double-page spread, keeping the layout consistent, rather than a single page that could disrupt printing.

When working with multiple pages, each page may have different dimensions. A new thumbnail view makes it easier to navigate such layouts. As you add new pages to the canvas, you can copy or drag and drop elements from other pages. You can now also resize new pages as if they were any other type of object.

With a multi-page collection of assets, the Export Docker helps manage output by allowing you to specify which pages need to be saved as GIFs or PNGs for online use and which as PDFs for printing. The Export Docker now includes support for SVG, EPS, and TIFF for high-resolution printing, as well as new options for selecting multiple assets if you want to change the file format.

The October 2021 update introduced an Asset Docker, showing files, libraries, and design elements available in the Corel cloud, including those shared with you. To manage potentially overwhelming projects, there’s now a list view, an edit button for opening files you own directly, and a summary of where shared assets have been used.

If another designer is working on the logo for a project you’re involved in, accessing it through a symbol library instead of copying and pasting ensures consistency if the logo is updated mid-project. A red dot in the library indicates that the logo has changed, but it won’t automatically apply to your layout. You can open the asset to see what’s different, such as a shape change from square to oval or a color change from purple to orange. When you decide to update to the new version of the symbol, it will automatically update all instances of the symbol in your document, maintaining consistency throughout your design.

We believe that cracking and sharing softwares is something great and needed, but please never forget to support his creators. If you can afford the product PLEASE buy it =)
